Flin Sharp
b. 1994
Flin Sharp’s practice is a study into the physical and conceptual history of images and image making. Through methods of erasing and layering marks over one another, Sharp’s works develop a mesh of stratified compositions relating to nostalgia and memory. The paintings which at first seem sparse and minimalistic, up close reveal the many layers of obfuscated imagery in order to evoke the
sensation of looking.
Where the proliferation of pictures is overly abundant today, Sharp is interested in conveying the sensation of looking.
Sharp’s process reflects a sincere grappling with representation in an age of image saturation. His work blends pop-culture, art historical references and archived internet imagery, unifying the vibrating nature of pictures today. Blue is a meditation on the tension between concrete images and their elusive meanings. It captures the paradox of painting: a static object that nevertheless feel alive, shifting with each viewer’s gaze.
Sharp has exhibited extensively in NSW with recent solo and joint exhibitions including dwam at Barrett House, Ley Lines at Nasha Gallery & Frogpit with Ryan Hancock at Canteen in Sydney. Recent group exhibitions include
Friendship Bracelet, Flower Potts, Sydney & Trip Show, Prop Gallery, Sydney in 2024.
Sharp has been a finalist in the Mosman Art Prize, Mosman Art Gallery, Brett Whiteley Traveling Art Scholarship, Brett Whiteley Studio, 2022, and Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, Campbelltown Art Centre, Campbelltown, as well as a recipient of the Barrett House Residency, 2024.
